Here are some fascinating facts about science and the scientific world.


Absolute Zero

Absolute Zero is the lowest possible which could possibly exist. It is -273.16 Degrees Celcius.

Barrels of Oil

The unit used to measure crude oil is the barrel. One barrel is 159 litres.

Coal

Liquid fuel can be made from coal by combining it with oil and hydregen gas at high temerature and pressure.

Diamonds

A diamond is a form of pure carbon.

Gold

Gold melts at 1064.83 degrees centigrade.

Ice

Ice floats on water because it becomes less dense when it freezes.

Magnetic Poles

A magnet has two poles, called north and south. Like poles repel each other and unlike poles attract each other (for example, two north poles will repel each other and a north and south pole will attract each other).

If it is allowed to swivel freely, a magnet will always turn so that its north pole points to the earth's magnetic north pole.

Rainbows

The seven colors in a rainbow are (from inside to outside) :- violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.

Refrigeration

In a refrigerator, a vapour is compressed and becomes liquid. This aborbs heat from the food, warms up and becomes a vapour again. This is returned to the compressor to start the cycle once more.
