Here are some fascinating facts about the game of golf.


British Open

The British Open competition was first held in 1860. For the first twelve years it was hosted at Prestwick in Scotland. Since then it has been held on a different course each year.

Golf Balls

The weight of a golf ball must not be more than 1.620 ounces (45.93 grams) and the diameter must not be less than 1.680 inches (42.67 mm).

Holes In A Round

In 1764 18 holes were set as the standard round.

Jack Nicklaus

Jack Nicklaus is known as "The Golden Bear".

Match Play and Medal Play

In a match play competition the winner is the golfer who wins the most holes and in a medal play competition the winner is the golfer who takes the least number of strokes.

Number of Clubs

In a competition the maximum number of clubs a player is permitted to have is fourteen.

Rules

The first set of rules for golf were drawn up in 1754 in St Andrews, Scotland.

Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup competition started in 1927 and is held every two years. Originally it was between the USA and Great Britain, but now it is between the USA and Europe.
